These men are all connected with a secret organisation... The Sandbaggers, the "dirty tricks" brigade of the Secret Intelligence Service -- so called because they are just as adept at blocking a political coup as providing the muscle for some "special operation."

Aged 50. Ex-Army Intelligence, joined Secret Intelligence Service 1960. Former head of Hong Kong Station and ex-Intelligence Directorate within S.I.S. Promoted to Deputy Chief of the Service in 1976. Married; one son, one daughter.

Aged 55. Joined Diplomatic Service 1948. Service in France, Iran, United States, Thailand, Hungary, East Germany; Consul-General, Munich, until joining Secret Intelligence Service June 1978, as "C". Married; two daughters.

Aged 58. Former Lieutenant-Colonel, Royal Artillery. Entered Foreign Service 1950. Permanent Under-Secretary of State and head of Diplomatic Service 1973. Married; one daughter, now divorced from Burnside.
